I slowly opened my eyes as the sun rose from the horizon and gleamed in through my window. Carefully, I sat up and let out a quiet yawn not wanting to wake up any of my four siblings who also had beds in the room and tiptoed barefoot out of the room. My name is Emma Jane Baker. I am 10 years old and have seven siblings. The main thing you need to know about me is that I absolutely positively love baking as well as listening to stories about the king and the queen and other marvelous adventures which others have taken.
Every morning I have the same routine: I wake up, get dressed and make everyone breakfast. For the drinks at breakfast I pore four glasses of ale and four glasses of wine. Then for the meal I bake two loaves of bread, heat some meat, and set out a block of cheese. Due to our prominent wealth I am also serving anchovies and wine with the breakfast meal.
As everyone starts waking up, they slowly wander into the kitchen and sit down on the wood benches. One by one we all take our seats and a few peasant girls serve us our meal.
Mass will take place after the meal. As well as finding time today to finish my spinning and get a pot of brew started.
After breakfast my father went straight to the bakery to bake bread and cakes for the fair. He will sell these later at the marketplace. Plus sometimes he will let us help decorate the cakes once he is finished baking them. We decorate them with berries and sometimes make cool designs on them.
One of the extras of being a baker's daughter is you get a wonderful last name. But as well as that you get to eat the extras and help in the kitchen whether it's baking or cleaning. What I am most interested about is the trades he does and what people pay him. Once I saw John Chick traded him a chicken and two eggs. But I have got to say the weirdest trade he has ever done that I have heard of was with the midwife. She traded him my sister Alice’s birth for two loaves of bread one cake and three eggs.
Two of my brothers Michel and Frank. Michel age 13 and Frank age 15 leave for their jobs every morning as well but they leave after my father does. Michel works up at the palace as one of the stable boys he gets paid one penny a week which is a lot for a stable boy. On the other hand Frank works for John Chick on his farm, and he said his favorite animal there is porkchop the pig. I have even meet him before he is very fat and extremely slow, but still very cute.
Almost every day my mother teaches my four sisters two who are just babies, my one younger brother, and I how to prepare food, spin and brew stew. It may sound boring, but it can be fun once you get started.
When my father and two brother get home from work I always get them a glass of beer no water though because it is very dirty. Nobody drinks water in this town just beer, wine, ale. I prefer wine because it tastes like grapes and beer is to bubblie. No one in our family drinks ale though, it does not taste as good as beer and wine.
To finish of my day I eat salmon, and bread. Then I say my prayers and put on my woolen gown then help my younger siblings get theirs on and put them into their beds and wish them a good night. Finally I crawl into my bed close my eyes and dream.
